Clear Ideas is a found footage work made by isolating landscapes from two science fiction films. Both films were shot on the island of Lanzarote, which plays a colonised Mars (left) and an apocalyptic Earth (right). Over the otherworldly terrains, a voice projects the words of private spaceflight industry leaders into the wind. The imagery and words collage dreams of spaceflight with nightmares of earthly collapse—a tension played upon in the visions of Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and others. Here, Lanzarote becomes the stage, an analogue site where human progress and catastrophe are imagined in the same place.
